Schwandorf, 18. May 2026
The successful Hoffnungshaus concept, already implemented in eleven municipalities in Baden-Württemberg, is now coming to Bavaria for the first time.

With Hoffnungshaus Schwandorf, a new and innovative housing project is being created on Herbststraße. It will include 31 rental apartments in three gallery-access buildings with communal terraces, offering space for around 90 people from different cultures, religions and generations.

The project sponsor, Hoffnungsträger Stiftung, places great importance on sustainable development and neighbourly encounters. ETAIROS Stiftung, formerly HORSCH Stiftung, is a key partner in the project. Behind the non-profit ETAIROS Stiftung are the shareholder families of the HORSCH Group. For many years, the foundation has been committed to fighting poverty, promoting integration and supporting sustainable development both regionally and internationally. In Schwandorf, the foundation supports, among others, Integration SAD, an initiative that has been accompanying refugees in the district since 2016 as they integrate and gain access to the labour market.

Award-winning integrative housing concept

The project follows the proven Hoffnungshaus® concept. In a Hoffnungshaus, people with and without refugee experience live together under one roof in an active house community made up of families, couples and individuals. The concept has already proven successful at more than ten locations in Baden-Württemberg, where 37 houses with around 260 apartments have been created. Each location is coordinated locally by a dedicated team. All residents contribute to life together.

For this model, Hoffnungsträger Stiftung received the Integration Award of the State of Baden-Württemberg in 2019, as well as awards from the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance and the Federal Agency for Civic Education in 2020. The architecture of the Hoffnungshäuser has also received several awards.

“With Hoffnungshaus Schwandorf, we are creating a place where people do more than live side by side – they can develop new perspectives together. The project combines housing, social support and neighbourly encounters, making it a real asset for the whole city,” says Thomas Röhm, Head of New Locations at Hoffnungsträger Hoffnungshaus®.

To involve local residents at an early stage and answer their questions in detail, several information events have already taken place in advance, including a joint visit to the Hoffnungshaus location in Schwäbisch Gmünd. There, interested neighbours were given an exclusive insight into the project’s way of working and its impact, helping them gain a realistic and personal impression.

Next steps

Alongside the progress of construction, regular site visits and further events for interested residents will be offered to keep the public informed and continue the dialogue. The foundation stone ceremony is planned for 8 June 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
