Housing concepts for social cohesion

For over ten years, Hoffnungsträger Hoffnungshaus® has been creating places where integration thrives and community grows. At twelve locations across Baden-Württemberg to date, people with and without refugee backgrounds live under one roof. Together, they create opportunities for themselves, strengthen social cohesion and give hope a home.

How the
HOFFNUNGSHAUS® WORKS

Integrative concept

Integration thrives in a vibrant community. Driven by this conviction, we have developed a proven housing concept: at our sites, people from different cultures, religions and generations live under one roof. They reside in individual apartments and all play an active role in shaping the community. Our aim is to bring residents together in a community and empower them to lead self-determined lives. We support people who are new to Germany on their journey in their new home. In doing so, everyone sees themselves as learners.

Each site is coordinated by an interdisciplinary team and supported by dedicated volunteers. Driven by the Christian principle of charity, these ‘bearers of hope’ live and work within the local community at each site. The Hoffnungshäuser (Houses of Hope) form part of the local network and bring added value to the entire neighbourhood.

This is how our
concept works

We ensure a balanced mix of residents from different walks of life.

Education takes place at the Hoffnungshaus® in all interactions and is complemented by targeted educational initiatives such as language courses, webinars and homework support.

We strengthen community work and provide individual support through one-to-one counselling. We also support the development of personal and professional prospects.

We foster what unites us and address our differences. This takes place in spaces created for encounters or through exchange programmes and joint celebrations.

We work closely with local authorities, church parishes, associations and local initiatives.

Our communal spaces, both indoors and outdoors, encourage encounters and interaction. Together, we take responsibility for our living environment.

Sustainable living

Our Hoffnungshäuser (Houses of Hope) innovatively combine architecture and community: the interior design encourages interaction – from open-plan kitchens and balconies that facilitate communication between floors, to communal areas both indoors and outdoors. Thanks to serial timber construction, the new buildings are sustainable, flexible and quick to erect. Affordable housing is part of our concept at all locations. The houses are built by our Hoffnungsträger project developers.
